Digital point and shoot cameras are incredibly popular for a reason; mind-blowing tech can fit in your pocket and they’re so easy to use. From photography beginners to pros, compact point and shoots are a great thing to have on hand.
It can be hard to differentiate between all of the digital compacts on the market, so here is a guide to breakdown the differences between some of the most popular ones.
Canon Powershot G7X Mark III
Marketed as “the vloggers camera”, the Canon Powershot G7X Mark III digital point and shoot has a 20.1MP CMOS sensor, meaning great quality images. The zoom on it as well is a 4.2x optical zoom, with 24-100mm equivalent. It has inbuilt image stabilisation, making shooting zoomed in a lot easier.

It can’t shoot 4K but only 1080p – it can also stream with this same quality as well which is a unique attribute that not many cameras in this category have. It also has a 3.0″ LCD screen, but no viewfinder. It has a built in pop-up flash, making it easier to shoot in low light situations and save the excess space of a separate flash.
It also allows for connection via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, making sharing easier. It is a great all round option, but specialises as being a good compact travel camera and good for vloggers and streamers. The lack of 4K is a step behind where lots of other compact digital cameras are, but it makes up for it with easy use and larger sensor size than most in this category.

Sony RX100 VII
Sony’s leading digital compact, the RX100 Mark VII, boasts 4K Ultra-HD recording and a 20.1MP EXMOR Stacked sensor. This camera has a pop up viewfinder – alongside the pop up in-built flash – making it a popular choice for photographers at all different levels.
With 8x optical zoom, the lens is a f/2.8-4.5 24-200mm equivalent, and a 90fps single burst shooting mode make it great for occasions that require the high speed shutter. With real-time tracking and eye AF for both stills and video, it makes it very easy to get in focus photos at such high speeds. Sports and wildlife photography is made easier with these features.

A great travel camera and popular among creators, it’s a great option for those needing that extra zoom and then all of the good video specs.

OM System TG-7
This camera is a tough one – it has a shockproof, waterproof, and freezeproof construction, making it perfect for the adventurous shooter. It has a 12MP BSI CMOS sensor and can record in 4K. It has a built in flash and a 3″ LCD screen. It has 4x optical zoom with a 35mm equivalent 25-100mm f/2-4.9 lens.
Something very unique about this camera is the ability to shoot macro. Microscope mode allows for a minimum focus distance of 0.39″, so capturing beautiful details is possible with such a tough exterior.
This camera is perfect for those who go to the extremes of the climate; it includes GPS, a thermometer, a compass, and a manometer. All of this information is stored in the photos and videos taken, allowing you to record the climate and where the data was collected.
Vertical video shooting is also supported and it can connect to other devices with the in-built Wi-Fi, making it great for quick sharing to social media. The camera itself can also be controlled with the in-built Wi-Fi from another device.

A great adventure camera and one to take on the most challenging and remote journeys, it has a tough exterior with lots of notable specs inside.
Panasonic Lumix TZ220D
The Panasonic Lumix TX220D has a zoom that can’t be matched. It has a 15x optical zoom and a 30x intelligent zoom, meaning that the lens can go from 24mm to 360mm. This lens is also a Leica DC Vario-Elmar lens, which is some beautiful glass.
It can shoot 4K video too, and has a pop-up flash. It also has a built in EVF and is quite lightweight, at approx 340g with the battery and SD card. It can shoot up to 6fps with AFC, so not as fast as some other cameras new and on the market today.
Released in 2018, it is a bit of an older model compared to the others listed but it still competes well. The 20.1MP with the Venus Engine image processor ensure images at a high quality, and was ahead of other compacts when it was originally released.
A highly regarded travel camera and notable for those who need the huge zoom that this camera has. Great results in both day and night.

Fujifilm Instax Mini EVO
Something a little different; the Fujifilm Instax Mini EVO is a hybrid digital and print camera. Able to store photos on a microSD, but also with the ability to print out chosen photos using the Instax Mini print cartridges. With 10 different lens effects and 10 different film effects, this camera is a fun twist and different to many others out there.

It can act solely as a camera – taking photos with the different effects and storing them on a microSD card. Photos taken on this camera can be printed by winding a lever like a film camera to advance the shot, and the print will come straight out of the Mini EVO.
It can also print photos straight from a phone. Using the Instax Mini EVO app, editing photos and adjusting them and then immediately printing is very easy. It’s something unique on the market for those who want physical copies of their photos instantly, yet still want to share them online.

This camera cannot shoot video so it’s not easily comparable to the other cameras in this list (the EVO also can’t shoot video, but none of the others are able to directly print photos either). It’s in its own league, and for an audience who wants something to have fun with and experiment with different effects and styles.
Conclusion
All of these cameras are great for different things – shooting 4K, having a huge zoom, being able to stream as a webcam and even printing out physical copies of photos. There is no one size fits all camera, but all of these listed are popular for good reason!
